Descriptions

One Line

A boxing card game for one: you owe a bookmaker $3,600 and have 10 weeks on the road in 1920 to pay it off, one shuffle of the deck at a time.

Short

Mickey Palooka is a boxing card game for one player, set in 1920. Every round deals 6 cards face up and you have to play 4. Black cards are his punches, red diamonds are yours, and hearts wait in your corner for the knockdown. You owe Abe Saltz $3,600. You have 10 weeks, 10 cities and 50 men between you and a clean marker.

Long

Mickey Palooka never paid his debt. You signed the same kind of marker: $3,600 to a bookmaker named Abe Saltz, due in 10 weeks. So you go on the road, New York to Los Angeles, and every week you pick a man off the bill and fight him over 12 rounds. Each fight is one shuffle of a deck of cards. 6 cards come up, you play 4, and the 2 you leave come back next round whether you like it or not. Black cards are his punches. Red diamonds are yours, to throw or to wear as a block. Hearts go to your corner and only cash when you're knocked down. Before each fight the bookmaker posts a board of bets on you, all in fictional money, and some nights there's an envelope asking you to take a dive. The whole story arrives on paper: the marker you sign, the wires under your door and the Sunday paper.

What's In It

  • 10 weeks on the road, 12 rounds a fight, 1 shuffle of the deck each time.
  • 50 named opponents, each with his own chin and his own press.
  • The Book: a board of bets before every fight, in fictional money.
  • A ledger that remembers every run, paid and unpaid.
  • 24 Steam achievements, all earned at the table.
  • Steam Cloud carries your ledger between Windows and Mac.
  • Mouse and keyboard, a gamepad, or your finger.
  • No deck to build and nothing to grind. The cards are the same for everyone. What changes is how you play them.
